2008 FSY Newspaper Project (SoCal)

FSY: The Newspaper Project is an innovative enrichment program for middle school students, grades 6-7 and 8-9, that centers on one comprehensive, interdisciplinary project: the student newspaper. Students create their own newspaper from start to finish, while learning the various techniques of journalism, genre writing and reading comprehension in the process.

Program Details

Who: Rising 6-9th Grade Students
Dates: June 23 - July 31
Times: 9am-12pm (Los Angeles)
2:30-5:30pm (Fullerton)


Early Registration Discount: Register by March 22 and receive $200 Off


FSY: The Newspaper Project will conclude with a field trip to a newspaper printing press where the students will learn about the printing process and see their newspapers printed, hot off the press.

Program Topics

FSY: The Newspaper Project allows students to learn a variety of journalism, writing and reading skills, and practice them in the context of a larger project, including:

  • Brainstorming & Finding "the story"
  • Writing in various genres: the persuasive essay, the critical essay, the expository essay
  • Analyzing advanced reading materials, such as The New York Times and The Wall Street Journal.
  • Developing communication skills including: interviewing techniques, and peer review and workshop
  • Conducting research
  • Editing
