2008 FSY Newspaper Project (SoCal)
FSY: The Newspaper Project is an innovative enrichment program for middle school students, grades 6-7 and 8-9, that centers on one comprehensive, interdisciplinary project: the student newspaper. Students create their own newspaper from start to finish, while learning the various techniques of journalism, genre writing and reading comprehension in the process.

FSY: The Newspaper Project will conclude with a field trip to a newspaper printing press where the students will learn about the printing process and see their newspapers printed, hot off the press.
Program Topics
FSY: The Newspaper Project allows students to learn a variety of journalism, writing and reading skills, and practice them in the context of a larger project, including:
- Brainstorming & Finding "the story"
- Writing in various genres: the persuasive essay, the critical essay, the expository essay
- Analyzing advanced reading materials, such as The New York Times and The Wall Street Journal.
- Developing communication skills including: interviewing techniques, and peer review and workshop
- Conducting research
- Editing
