SAT Junior Language Program

Newspaper - medium

Plainly put, most students don't like reading. The SAT* Junior Language curriculum, developed by an English instructor at Stanford University, is designed to turn a reluctant young reader into an enthusiastic one. At SAT*-reading levels, students study current events and other relevant issues while learning how to approach such materials "SAT*-style".

Some of the skills taught in the SAT* Junior Language Program include:

  • Identifying a writer's main argument
  • Comprehending stated information
  • Finding vocabulary in context rather than relying on a dictionary
  • Ascertaining a writer's tone
  • Analyzing a writer's rhetorical techniques and the structure of his/her argument.

Reading material is generally taken from standard newsstand publications such as The New York Times, Newsweek, or Time magazine.
